New Years Musings

If you are reading this, Congratulations! You have made it to the New Year! I, woke up early on New Years Eve, feeling bright and giddy, humming while making my morning coffee. There’s something undeniable about the calendars changing over that evokes hope.

A few years ago, I put the notion of resolutions to bed. What I do now is to purposefully set intentions and I have found that the patterns and thoughts I commit to at the beginning of one year, stick for the rest of the year. You might have heard the saying, “We make plans and God laughs” but also have heard that “if you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” So… what does one do?

For me… Its definitely planning with a mind to pivot as quickly or as easily as I need to.

2019 Goals
  1. If you have watched or played basketball at some point in your life, you have probably heard the terms Offense and Defense. Suffice to say I have played the proverbial defense position for a long time now and I do not intend to keep playing this life position in 2019 and going forward. The thing about fear is that it keeps you from venturing out further from your goal. Instead you work really hard to prevent the ball from getting into the post and it is an endless game of playing catch up. What you sacrifice on the other end is years of not taking risks for the life you truly want or deserve.
  2. Third guessing: So you have gone through the decision making process of a BIG decision. You have weighed the pros and the cons, you have budgeted and even identified where you the resources would come from. Then on consulting with the umpteenth person, they mention a variable you had not thought about or considered. This, you decide, has got to be carefully considered and you go back to square one. There are things in my life I have wanted to do and honest to God, its been about 5 years of going back and forth with second and third guessing process. In 2019, just like Nike, Just Do It, is what I’ll make my motto.
  3. Procrasti…for-the-whole-nation: “Procrastination” The art of putting everything and everyone else before the things you know need to be done. You will have noticed a theme here. In fact, there is a real vicious cycle of one leading to the other but many of us, at least me, are guilty. Fact: There are a million little things that need to be taken care of. Also Fact, Doing some of the important things will negate the need for at least 900 little things. But like most people playing defense/ catch up, its the little things that take up the time and space for more important things. 2019. You heard me. I’m making the difficult decisions first.

There are a few other things like prioritzing health, wellness and feeling good but those were 2018 priorities that I’ll be carrying forward.
